APHR writes to ASEAN Chair and Timor-Leste President demanding proof that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is alive
July 21
During the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Manila, Philippines, the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) sent letters to ASEAN Chair Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta, making demands.
The letters urge both leaders to pressure and push for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Myanmar, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Furthermore, APHR demands that the ASEAN Chair establish as a "non-negotiable condition" that in any continued engagement with the Myanmar junta, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's family, legal representatives, and medical professionals must be granted unrestricted access to her.
APHR also urges Timor-Leste President Ramos-Horta, who was the first in the ASEAN region to file a case under Universal Jurisdiction against the coup junta led by Min Aung Hlaing, to push for effective action by the ASEAN body.
Regarding the statement issued by the ASEAN Special Envoy on July 19, APHR points out that merely reaffirming the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus is insufficient, and that verifiable positive outcomes are needed, particularly evidence demonstrating that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is "alive and safe."
Therefore, APHR urges the ASEAN Chair to test whether the re-engagement with the junta during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting yields real results by demanding proof that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is alive.
