MyoTaw: Strong Monsoon May Bring Heavy Rainfall and Flooding in Some Regions

Heavy rainfall and potential river flooding expected in some regions and states due to strong monsoon

The southwest monsoon is continuing to strengthen over northern Myanmar and the western coastal areas, according to meteorologist U Win Naing's forecast and analysis.

Moisture-laden monsoon currents directly entering from the Bay of Bengal are surging forcefully toward the Rakhine coastal region and the northern mountain ranges of Myanmar. As a result, rainfall of 350 to over 400 millimeters could be recorded in Sagaing Region (upper part) and Rakhine State (northern part) within 5 to 7 days, it was reported.

In Tanintharyi Region and Shan State (northern part), prolonged persistent rainfall could accumulate to around 200 millimeters in total. The Sittaung River basin in Bago Region (eastern part) is also expected to continue receiving moderate rainfall due to cloud formations rising from the Gulf of Mottama, according to reports.

In Magway Region, Mandalay Region, Naypyidaw, and Shan State (eastern part), which remain in the rain shadow of the Rakhine Yoma mountain range, total rainfall over 7 days is expected to be below 50 millimeters, with scattered rain days continuing, it was reported.

Due to excessive rainfall in Kachin State and Sagaing Region (upper part), flooding has begun along the Ayeyarwady River and the upper Chindwin River. These river waters are expected to continue flowing downstream to Sagaing, Mandalay, Pakokku, and Pyay in early August, requiring close monitoring, according to reports.

Meteorologist U Win Naing has warned that river levels may exceed the danger mark and cause flooding in the Sittaung River basin in Bago Region (eastern part) (Taungoo, Phyu, Shwegyin) and river basin areas within Tanintharyi Region, urging caution.
