Two youths from Lewe Township, Naypyidaw, who threw stones at the No. 6 DEMU passenger express train operating on the Mandalay-Yangon route, have been arrested and a case has been filed against them under the Railway Transport Law for legal action, it has been learned.

At approximately 1:56 PM on July 31, the No. 6 down Mandalay-Yangon DEMU passenger express train was hit by stones thrown from the eastern side of the railway track upon reaching between mile posts 212/20 and 21, between Ela and Thawatti stations near Naypyidaw, it has been reported.

The individuals who threw the stones have been identified as Maung Aung Thet Oo, aged 15, son of U Win Oo, and Maung Pyar Tho, aged 14, son of U Win Kyaing, both residents of Yankin Village, Lewe Township, Naypyidaw, according to sources.

As a result of the stone-throwing incident, the left upper body of the last carriage, No. 4 first-class coach, in the train set was struck, causing paint damage, but no passengers were injured, it has been reported.

The incident caused a train delay of approximately 12 minutes. The suspects have been arrested, and a case has been filed at the Ela Area Police Station in Lewe Township for legal action under the Railway Transport Law, according to sources.

Similarly, on July 29 at just after 3 PM, the No. 32 down DEMU train departing from Naypyidaw to Yangon was hit by stones on its right side while crossing the Suwannakone Overpass Bridge between Thangankyun and Mahlwagone stations, causing the lower part of the passenger boarding door to shatter and crack, it has been reported.

Under Section 79(b), Chapter 18 of the Railway Transport Law issued on January 5, 2016, anyone who throws objects at a train or commits any act against it shall be sentenced to a minimum of 5 years and up to no more than 20 years of imprisonment, in addition to which a fine may also be imposed, according to sources.

On October 28 at approximately 3 PM, Maung Htet Oo Lwin (a) Nga Thaw Ni, aged 23, from Phyu Township, who threw broken ceramic tiles at the first-class carriage of the Yangon-Mandalay DEMU express train, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor by the Taungoo District Court on December 5.
